DISCUSSION TABLE - Students discussion program

Socio13 organises 'Discussion Table' program periodically which aims to bring out views and ideas of the students on different topics ranging from classical theories to contemporary issues and happenings. Every session will have specific topic or an issue on which the participants can express their standpoint and refute and corroborate others, while moderator directing the discussion. Experts in the fields of the discussion topics are also invited. This program is primarily meant for the students studying Sociology at Loyola College and other institutions. However, students from other disciplines and colleges can also join us and participate, with prior registration.

Travesty of Women Empowerment

When I asked a good friend of mine about her insight on women empowerment, I simply loved her stance. It wasn't a well-theorized one like an experts view, which makes us complex to comprehend the idea! But, it was humble and straightforward instead, which bombarded me with different thoughts.

"Getting a woman empowered lies in her own hands and in the hands of her society" she said. "A girl's life is invariably influenced by others at all times and remains inert by the clutches of her surroundings.. When we do not have command over our own being, there is no chance of progress" she added. "The will to take up challenges on her way towards development, must comes from her own self at all degrees and her society must encourage her ventures to get empowered". But I'm perplexed because something converse is happening nowadays....

RIGHT TO CHOICE: Not necessarily!
In the present modern-'enlightened' era, it is undeniable that our women themselves are ignorant of what empowerment is all about. The will to empower them is not genuine and are misguided by the so called 'feminist approaches'. They tend to adopt several things, almost everythings, that are male-stereotyped and believe that that is the only mean to get empowered in a society which is male chauvinistic. How dressing like a male, especially Jeans and T-shirts, or riding a manual-gear bike make them equivalent to men and endow them their rights? Or do women think that those are their real rights they are deprived of for centuries?? In a classroom discussion on 'Gender sensitivity', a girl came up with an odd question which made me to ponder. "Why women in India who consumes alcoholic drinks are seen with suspicion and hatred and the act of approaching a liquor store to buy alcoholic beverages remains a socially, culturally prohibited and unaccepted, while the very same acts by men are considered functional?" Though she acceded that alcoholism is harmful to both men and women and drinking is itself a social evil, she ascertains that her right to choice is defied. "This is a sort of gender discrimination", she argued. Of course her argument is valid and genuine but I would rather take a different turn.

Scientific researches say that women develop long-term complications of alcohol dependence more rapidly than men do. The mortality rate from alcoholism is also high in women comparingly. Such complications include brain, heart, and liver damage, increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive dysfunction such as anovulation, decreased ovarian mass, problems or irregularity of the menstrual cycle, early menopause, etc. When the 'mother nature' herself has discriminated women in this regard, why not give-up their 'Right to choice' when the basic rights of several women in the very same society are denied in several fronts?? But it is really disheartening to hear that there is rapidity in increase of women adicted to alcoholism in recent years, especially in IT hotbeds such as Bangalore and Chennai. "If women thinks to find equality and goes to drink, then most of us should run our families in liquor shops" my friend lamented.

And comes the mockery created by the so called 'IT sector' in this regard, which is rather amusing. Mass employment of women in the service sector with attractive and equitable payment packages, which was a daydream few decades ago, is now a reality in urban areas to be specific. It seems that the MNCs now encourage feminism inside their campuses, corporates in the business processing and outsourcing (BPO) sectors are increasing prefering women while recruiting. This shows a good sign but at what cost? Corporates prefer women mainly because of the fact that they do not protest or agitate usually unlike men. When equitable salary is paid, they are pleased what ever injustices abound. There is a wide prevalence of harassment and violence against women at offices, which is often heared at a minimal or no voice.

In 1997 Vishaka judgement, the Supreme court of India, for the first time, recognised sexual harassment at the workplace as a violation of human rights and outlined a set of guidelines for the prevention of and redressal of complaints. But very little is known about the extent to which sexual harassment persists, the kinds of action taken against such incidents and whether working women are even aware of such constitutional provisions. But the menace continues to be common occurance at workplace, typically perpetrated by persons of authority. A majority of women do not take action or lodge official complaints for fear of being dismissed, losing their reputation or facing hostility or social stigma. There are immoral and heartless people, especially in cities working in IT companies both men and women, who claim sexual harassment at workplace as "normal" and "harmless". I don't think we can't be that stupid and ridiculous, living in a nation which is itself portrayed as a women!

It is said that the progress of a nation depends on the status of its women. Imagine, if the household work done by our mothers are calculated monetarily and to be added to the national income, the economic contribution of women in India may even overrun that of mens'. India is 'pro-feme' in its culture and heritage but the real status of women remains poor even today. There is an increasing level awareness and enlightenment on empowering women among us, but such transformations should not lose vigor and misguided. Our women must realise such things and be aware of what they are looking for. And the initiation to fight for injustices must be self-driven, because, I think no one can improve their life and status otherthan themselves!

Cult of Personality (2)

Joseph Stalin:
Stalin is perhaps the finest example of a cult of personality. His cult of personality is considered to be the first and the most influential and the measuring rod for all other similar cults.

Stalin satisfies all five conditions(refer to my previous article) for a cult of personality to flourish:The Soviet Union was dominated by workers who were controlled by a small ruling elite in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union(CPSU),The majority of the Soviet Union's citizens were illiterate,Stalin came to power in the chaotic aftermath of Vladimir Lenin's death,Stalin had many loyalists in the CPSU giving him enormous political capital and Stalin was very charismatic.

Stalin was a originally a low ranking member of the CPSU and played many roles in the Russian Revolution mainly in the Soviet invasion of Georgia, he kept a low profile which helped him rise through the ranks and eventually become the third most powerful man in the USSR after Lenin and Leon Trotsky. Lenin had decreed,in his last testament, that after his death the USSR was to be ruled by a council of three people(Leon Trotsky,Stalin and Gregory Zinoviev) but Stalin used his supporters to suppress the testament and through a combination of muscle power and cunning was able to become the general secretary of the CPSU(Effectively the most powerful post in the USSR).

Once in power Stalin began to consolidate his power by expanding the powers of the Soviet secret police(The NKVD) and eliminating anyone he considered a threat to his power culminating in the Great purge which lasted from 1925 to 1940 and resulted in the death of many CPSU members, army generals, ordinary Soviet citizens and even two heads of the NKVD who were considered to be dangerous.

When the purge ended,Stalin became the absolute ruler of the USSR and to reinforce that power,he created an enormous cult of personality around himself. He named many cities, towns and villages after himself(including the famous city of Stalingrad),he also accepted many grand titles to his name (e.g., "Coryphaeus of Science," "Father of Nations," "Brilliant Genius of Humanity," "Great Architect of Communism," "Gardener of Human Happiness," and others) and in many paintings and statues he was made to look tall and powerful(He had many artists shot when they did not depict him 'right') when he really was only around 5 ft 5in. He also rewrote Soviet history to make it look like he played a major role in the revolution and he downgraded Lenin's part in it to look like he was only a small part of it.

During World War II Stalin's cult of personality reached new levels with his name being included in the Soviet National Anthem and Stalin became the subject of many films, poems, songs, books etc which credited him with God-like qualities and suggested that he had single handedly won the war.Images of him appeared everywhere from government offices to small back streets.

After his death his successor Nikita Khruschev denounced Stalin and his policies and above all his Cult of Personality which was dismantled soon after Stalin died.Stalin's style of leadership was named Stalinism and inspired many other world leaders such as Mao Zedong,Enver Hoxha,Nicolae Ceausescu and Kim-Il-Sung. Stalin's cult of personality has amazed many historians and politicians and is considered to have been the measuring rod for all other cults.

Though Stalin's cult of personality is definitely impressive, even it pales in comparison to the next cult of personality I shall write about with which I shall conclude my articles on the Cult of Personality.

"…..Handல glass, glassல scotch…."

-->

The Social Evolution (2)

The term survival of the fittest in the Darwinian evolution refers only to the survival of the species as a whole and never to the individual.to be broader it more likely refers to the next generation that would be more adaptive in nature to its surroundings.I did not try to establish the similarities between social evolution and biological evolution, but tried to say that they are both overlapping and highly interdependent.

In today's society individuals have become highly interdependent in such a way that an individual survival is highly impossible. The division of labor is on is something that is taking place in all aspects of society. And is something that is inevitable. In my view social evolution will take place proportional to the division of labor. As the division of labor increases the interdependence will increase to such an level that individual survival will impossible. So I would say that division of labor is inversely proportional to the survival of the individual.Evolution will always be aiming at the betterment of the ways of survival of the individual. And we got to know that there might be negative steps that may be taking place in the society or the surrounding in the process of evolution. For example though humanity has been marching towards an better future wars were and are inevitable.they have caused millions of death within the species and by the species.Evolution can be just referred to as change taking place(in a positive direction but may take a negative path).
Now we have to think of the consequences. The industrial revolution which was one of the greatest changes that took place int he society has led to various consequences like pollution and many more.It has put the whole of earth's population in threat. What has the evolution caused in this case? That is a disaster coming up!These will be referred to by me as the unexpected end undesirable consequences that come by during the process of evolution. We have to tackle these problems or we will perish like those beautiful looking creatures which have become valuable fossils today.

Ode to Bhopal

Ode to Bhopal

Human life, Human life,
There it goes down the drain.
No sword, no knife,
Just toxic food and grain.

No honey, not money,
Bills won’t ease my pain.
Green field, plenty yield,
Is what I want to gain.

You fly, I die,
Under thy command.
“You live, I not cry”,
Is all, I demand.

Come ye, all to see,
Injustice Served to all,
Oh ye, find me,
“At my guillotine, Bhopal”.

Child Abuse

Child abuse is an issue, a problem which no one really cares. Child abuse often happens when a child is neglected and abandoned. The deep wound of being subjected to abuse let the child live in constant terror and agony and often guilt of being abused, gives sleepless nights to the victim. I strongly believe its our duty to speak about it, to shout about it and we should thrive to raise awareness regarding the possibility of child abuse and we can prevent child abuse by letting it not happen to every other vulnerable child by encouraging every child who is abused to not keep the episode of being abused , a secret. It is ridiculous to find people turning to be fatalists when they learn that their child is abused and thereby the victim is subjected to mere humiliation and also further abuse as in several cases , it is often the father or brother or uncle or grandfather who is the culprit. When i convey this message it is not Sherin who is telling you this but it is a victim who is crying for help to help other vulnerable children. So, let us join hands to sensitise this issue which is of utmost importance.
